Tyler, James C, G. David Johnson, Izumi Nakamura, and Bruce B. Collette. Morphology of Luvarus imperialis (Luvaridae), with a Phylogenetic Analysis of the Acanthuroidei (Pisces). Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology, number 485,78 pages, 50 figures, 1989.—The osteology of the rarely collected epipelagic fish Luvarus imperialis Rafinesque, the louvar, is redescribed, based for the first time on cleared and stained specimens of juveniles and young adults, as well as on dried skeletons of larger adults. Knowledge of the structure of fossil luvarids, from their first occurrence in the upper Paleocene to a very well-preserved specimen from the lower Eocene, is reviewed and their status re-evaluated. Earlier comparative anatomical studies are reviewed in historical perspective with regard to previously proposed relationships. It has been postulated most frequently that Luvarus is related to carangoid or scombroid fishes, the latter hypothesis having been the most widely accepted. With cladistic methodology and with much additional detailed information on the osteology and larval morphology of Luvarus and other groups, the carangoid and scombroid hypotheses are refuted. Luvarus is actually a highly specialized pelagic member of the typically reef-associated Acanthuroidei, the surgeon fishes and their allies. Scatophagids and ephippidids, respectively, are the first and second outgroups for the Acanthuroidei. Anatomical diagnoses of all acanthuroid genera are given. A cladistic analysis of the intra-relationships of the Acanthuroidei, based on 90 characters encompassing both larval and adult morphology, provides a highly corroborated hypothesis indicating the following phyletic sequence: Siganidae—Luvaridae—Zanclidac—Acanthuridae. OFFICIAL PUBLICATION DATE is handstamped in a limited number of initial copies and is recorded in the Institution's annual report, Smithsonian Year. Morphology and Phylogeny of Scrippsiella trochoidea (Dinophyceae) a potentially harmful bloom forming species isolated from the sediments of Iran’s south coast
Phytoplankton cells and resting cysts of the species Scrippsiella trochoidea are regular and dominant components of the dinoflagellate flora of coastal marine waters and sediments around the world. This species is a common harmful bloom forming species in coastal waters. In this study, for the first time cyst of S. trochoidea were isolated from the sediments of southeast coast of Iran. Five str...
متن کاملPhylogeny of Astragalus sect. Alopecuroidei based on the combined nrDNA ITS and morphology
A phylogenetic analysis of Astragalus sect. Alopecuroidei based on nrDNA ITS as well as morphological character data is presented. A total of fifty informative morphological characters were analyzed to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships for 23 taxa of the sect. Alopecuroidei and two species of sect. Laxiflori plus A. sieversianus and A. caryolobus as outgroups. The present analysis revealed...
متن کاملAssessment of relationships between Iranian Fritillaria (Liliaceae) Species Using Chloroplast trnh-psba Sequences and Morphological Characters
The genus Fritillaria comprises of 165 taxa of medicinal, ornamental and horticultural importance. Evolutionary relationships in this genus is an interesting research area, attracting many researchers. In this study, phylogenetic relationships among 18 native to endemic species in Iran belonging to four subgenera Petilium, Theresia, Rhinopetalum and Fritillaria, are assessed using chloroplast t...

Climate change has a great impact on the species distribution range and many endangered plant species. Fritillaria imperialis as a species that is native to Central Zagros, Iran is a medicinal plant with great ecological and commercial profits. Its population has decreased considerably and the species would be endangered in later decades. Understanding the habitat needs of this species, evaluat...
متن کاملPhylogenetic relationships of anamorphic form of some Pleosporalean genera based on analysis of ITS rDNA and RPB2
Pleosporaceae is an important Dothideomycetes family. To elucidate relationships among some selected anamorphic pleosporalean taxa, their Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) and RNA polymerase second largest subunit (RPB2) were sequenced and compared. Phylogenetic analyses of both ITS and RPB2 regions were almost similar and generally congruent with previously described phylogenies and morphology...
